6 Surefire Ways to Get out of a Creative Rut
Between the daily tasks that need to be done in your business, updating your social media accounts, and living your life, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed and like your creative well is running dry. It’s important to recharge and do what you need to do in order to continue giving of your best self in all aspects of your work. We’ve outlined some great ideas for taking time for yourself to recharge and get out of a creative rut. Don’t feel guilty about taking time for yourself. The investment you make in yourself will pay off in the long run as you deliver better work.
Read a Book
Books are storehouses of knowledge and wisdom. It doesn’t matter if you choose to read a fiction book or a nonfiction book. The important thing is setting aside the time required to enter into the mindspace of something else. A story can jumpstart your creativity and increase your empathy. Seeing things from a different perspective can alter how you see things in your everyday life. Reading beautifully woven sentences can also help you refine your own wordcraft and write better copy. Nonfiction can do some of the same things as well as pass on new information and motivate and inspire you. Either choice is a good one and making time to read a book should be a regular part of your life.
Visit a Museum
If reading isn’t enjoyable for you, consider visiting a museum instead. Just like books, there are many options for museums to visit. Art, history, or science museums will all bring a perspective shift. Additionally, seeing what has been accomplished at a museum can really inspire you. Great and beautiful pieces of art or technological advances showcase the ingenuity and tenacity of the human spirit. A visit to a museum will both inspire and challenge you as you go back to your own work. It may also spark new ideas on how to handle things in your own life.
Perhaps the hardest thing to do in our society is to unplug from our electronic devices. We are always on our smartphones and tablets and a lot of people in our lives expect that they will always be able to reach us that way. The constant distraction of push notifications wreaks havoc on our ability to concentrate and produce. While it may not be easy, the decision to unplug can pay off in big ways. It may be necessary to let all the important people in your life know that you will be taking some time to unplug and then go spend some time away from where you might be distracted by electronic devices. If it is not possible to unplug for a long period of time due to work commitments, schedule short intervals throughout your day when you can be away from your smartphone. Limit the number of times you check your email throughout the day in order to further minimize distraction.
Talk to other Respected Professionals in Your Field or Attend a Workshop
Speaking with others who do the same work you do can be incredibly inspiring. Seek out some connections on LInkedIn or at your business who do work you admire or have been doing the work for longer. Alternatively, you can find a workshop or networking meeting in your area and make plans to attend that. It’s faulty to assume at any time that you have learned everything there is to learn. You can always gain more wisdom and insight and taking the opportunity to learn from others can unlock parts of your imagination that were previously untapped. Bouncing ideas off respected professionals in your field or adding new skills will help you feel even more empowered to continue to do great work.
Do Something New Or Different
A rut by definition has you doing the same thing over and over again and feeling like you aren’t making any progress. So it makes sense that one of the ways you can get out of a rut is by doing something new. This doesn’t need to be something professional, you can simply do something totally new in your personal life. Perhaps you have always wanted to take a dance class, join a team sport, or learn to make a certain kind of food. Set aside the time to do these things without any distractions and allow yourself to be fully present as you experience them. Forcing your mind to approach things in a new way will help you when you go back to create or do your own work. It will also give you new life and learning experiences to draw from in your work and increase your overall empathy and understanding.
The health benefits of exercise are clear. In addition to offering great health benefits, though, exercise can help you release your emotions in a productive manner and clear your mind. Going for a run or doing an aerobic workout forces you to concentrate on the immediate and physical world. This will give your mind a break from whatever problem you are ruminating over and allow you to attack it with a fresh perspective when you return to it. As an added bonus, you’ll just feel better. Making exercise a regular part of your life is not a bad idea for an overall better approach to everything, but taking a walk when you need one also has its benefits.
It’s never fun to be stuck in a rut and it can be an incredibly frustrating experience professionally. If you engage in some of these solutions, however, you will find that it’s possible to break out of it and emerge even better than before.
